Furry Conventions

Furry Conventions. Something mostly every fur wants to go to at least once.

With one question that seems to be on every first timer furry convention goer's mind: What happens at these conventions?

Well this weekend is FA:United (http://www.faunited.org), and on Saturday morning I will be hosting a panel called Furst Time to a Furcon.
I'll be speaking, not as a convention chair, but as an experienced con goer. I'll mention some of the furry "staples" that you can see at a convention, and some of the word of mouth furry convention quips and etiquette that all furs learn to know.
My personal experience: A furry fan since 1995 when I first started on the internet. My first furry meet/gathering was in 1998 in NYC, my first furry convention was Anthrocon 2000. Since then, I've been to furmeets on a weekly basis, ranging from 1-4 gatherings a week, and I attend 4-9 conventions a year. I've been volunteering and have been on staff for furry conventions since 2002, and worked with Fur Affinity to get the first online community based convention started in my home state of NJ. I started a furmeet in 2001 that still continues today on a weekly basis in NJ. I also have been in the planning stages for a Furry Lifestyle Magazine that I plan on kicking into full gear by the spring of 2009.

Basically... I would like to know from the members of this community, something that you would have a question about if it was your first time to a furry convention. After looking over my talking points for my panel, I realized some of it may have been from a biased or jaded perspective. I scrapped them all and am writing new talking points that I think will be focused on a real first time experience. Any opinions that anyone has here would be greatly appreciated :)

Well, my first convention was Megaplex this year and it was a great first experience for me.

The question that I do have actually is: What should I really try to experience at a 4 day con such as AC, or try to take in?

Glad you enjoyed it! I had a great time too :)

With AC, it really is a social furry convention. One thing I would really try to do there is hang out at the zoo or go to the smaller panel events that you are able to find, this makes it easier to meet new people. The amount of people that you'll see (3,500+), easily makes it the busiest convention and while it's fun, it isn't very relaxing.
As you start to learn where everything is in the convention center, things get a lot easier to manage. My favorite spots to frequent at AC are the Zoo, smaller Panel rooms, and Artist Alley/Dealers room :)

With pricey hotel costs, I would still recommend making the 4 day trip a 5 day trip, with your first day being the day before the convention, so you settle in before the weekend crowd really swarms in.
